Most women I know struggle with body weight and are invariably trying hard to lose weight. In fact I don’t know any woman who is content with her body and for the longest time I felt the same way. Over several years of hustling and trying new diet fads, my perception of food has changed immensely. How I feel about food and its relationship with my body is something that makes me feel so positively aligned and is an eternal source of happiness.
I always felt that losing weight would make me feel happy or accepted and that’s so not the case. I spent lot of time and energy in my 20’s feeling this way and struggled to fit in. Now in my 30’s, I’m in the best form I have ever been (of course it can get better) and more importantly…I feel so much at peace.
So here’s my laundry list of things I resonate with and I do hope some of you may find this helpful –
Don’t be on a diet
I really have an aversion to the phrase – ‘being on a diet’. Some people with health issues need to follow some dietary guidelines to stay healthy, I get it, but being on a ‘diet’ to lose weight is so old school. Spare yourself the trauma of being on a diet, be more mindful about what you eat instead.
Since the last few years I’ve been eating Paleoish for the most part, but in the last year or so I started eating some variety of lentils and white rice. I am now more flexible about introducing foods that agree with my body. This is a trial and error process and works differently for everyone. What works for me may not work for you and what what works for me now may not work for me few years down the line.
Setting goals versus going with the flow
With all my spiritual/self-help reading, I’ve realized that setting goals towards anything is starting from a negative place of the lack of something. The ‘goal-setting’ process involves trying too hard, struggling, feeling stressed and pressurized to reach that specific goal. The best thing I’ve discovered is to go with the flow…if I want to eat a chocolate chip muffin I will eat it without feeling guilty about it. But I do know its not something I will do everyday, I will devour it more when I treat it as an occasional indulgence.
Mindful Eating
Personally, this has been the most challenging thing, its tough to not go through a bag of plantain chips while binge watching a show on Netflix. An ideal situation would be to avoid watching TV or browse anything on your phone while eating a meal but this is work in progress for me. There’s however one trick that works in being more mindful, I drink a glass of water before a meal, I then eat one serving of my meal. I drink another glass of water and see if I really need to go for a second helping. You will realize that a lot of times when you think you’re hungry…you’re actually thirsty. There are many instances when I’ve realized that I don’t need a second serving of food after drinking water cause I was really thirsty.
Eating seasonal foods and easy home cooked meals
I prefer shopping for in-season produce (can’t wait for summer berries and watermelon!) and meal-prepping over the weekend or at least semi-prep some meals for the week. Eating home cooked food means you have full control of the quality of ingredients. Make this a fun thing to do instead of a daunting task to check off the list. This one comes easy to me as I appreciate experimenting with ingredients and the activity of cooking a meal.
Don’t underestimate the power of a good night’s sleep
Sleep is the most magical thing in the process of healthy living, its as significant as eating well and drinking enough water. You can eat as healthy as you want but if you don’t sleep well nothing you do towards staying fit will work. So never compromise on your 7-8 hours of beauty sleep.
Feel Happy!
This may not sound like a pro-tip to lose weight but I saved the most important one for the end. Worrying about why you are not losing weight is NOT going to make you lose weight. Getting in that workout with a feeling of fear or pressure that you will gain weight if you don’t do so is starting from a negative place. It took me a long time to apprehend this but it is possibly the best thing I did for myself. I have absolutely stopped worrying about fluctuations in body weight (no weighing scale) – I just do things that work for me and enjoy the process.
